As a Member Institution of the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium/New Jersey Sea Grant, colleges and universities are entitled to rentals of research and small draft vessels. Free use of field and lab equipment is also available on a short-term basis. NJMSC/NJSG has a cooperative agreement with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) which makes the use of their research vessel, the R/V Nauvoo, available to your institution. To arrange for rental time please follow the procedure outlined below.
  1. Contact Captain Jason Saxe or Captain Pete Plantamura at 732-872-3095 to plan your trip and reserve ship time. Please note that ship time reserved at this point is only tentative pending clearance from NJMSC/NJSG.
  2. For clearance, you will need to complete a charter agreement and return it via email to Debbie Meehan (electronic signature required), fax (732-291-4483, attn: Debbie) or by mail (Debbie Meehan, NJMSC/NJSG, 22 Magruder Road, Fort Hancock, NJ 07732). This form must be completed and submitted for every trip.
  3. Per the charter agreement you must also supply Debbie Meehan with a Certificate of Insurance that names the NJMSC/NJSG as Additional Insured and confirms that the amount of coverage’s specified are in force. You may also opt to supply a Certificate of Insurance to the NJMSC/NJSG annually to be kept on file.
  4. Once both conditions are met, you will be contacted by Debbie Meehan who will also clear your ship time with NMFS.
  5. Part of the agreement with NMFS requires NJMSC/NJSG users to complete and submit a cruise data report (.xls). The report should be completed and returned within 10 days of your cruise to Debbie Meehan.
  6. The rate for charters as of October 1, 2008 is $1350.00 per day or $785.00 per half day. You will be billed by the NJMSC/NJSG following your completed charter.
Conference room facilities which now include video conferencing capabilities are also available and can be reserved by contacting Tara Shah or by calling her at 732-872-1300 ext. 10.

Member Institutions can also take advantage of the Education Department’s field trip services for their own college level classes or as a supplemental part of any special K-12 programs affiliated with their institution. For more information about incorporating field trips into your curriculums and courses, contact Rosemary Higgins or call 732-872-1300 ext 19.
